UK Thunderball
UK Thunderball is a twice-daily draw lottery operated by Camelot on behalf of the National Lottery Commission. Draws take place every day at 10:00 and 19:30 GMT.
How the Game Works
You pick five main numbers from a range of 1 to 39. You also select one Thunderball from 1 to 14.
A Thunderball draw selects five numbers from the main pool and one number from the Thunderball pool. Your prize depends on how many of your main numbers match the draw, and whether your Thunderball matches.
The Thunderball acts as a multiplier on lower-tier wins. If your Thunderball matches, your prize increases. This structure means you can win prizes without matching all five main numbers.
Prize Tier Breakdown
Thunderball has eight prize divisions.
Match all five main numbers plus the Thunderball and you win the jackpot. This is the rarest outcome.
Match five main numbers without the Thunderball places you in Division 2. Match four main numbers plus the Thunderball for Division 3. The pattern continues downward: four main numbers without the Thunderball, three main numbers plus the Thunderball, three main numbers without the Thunderball, two main numbers plus the Thunderball, and finally one main number plus the Thunderball in Division 8.
Each division has fixed odds. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 34. This makes Thunderball more frequent than large national lotteries but with smaller average payouts.
Draw Schedule and Operator
Camelot has operated the National Lottery, including Thunderball, since 1994 under regulation by the Gambling Commission and the National Lottery Commission.
Draws happen at 10:00 GMT and 19:30 GMT every single day, including weekends and public holidays. There is no suspension period. This twice-daily schedule differs from most European lotteries, which draw once or twice per week.
Results are published immediately after each draw. Tickets must be purchased before the draw cutoff time, which varies by retailer but is typically 30 minutes before the scheduled draw.
Mathematics and Expected Value
The odds of matching all five main numbers are 1 in 575,757. Adding the Thunderball requirement makes the jackpot odds 1 in 8,060,598.
Expected value depends on the jackpot amount and the prize structure. Unlike progressive jackpots that grow each draw, Thunderball typically has a fixed or capped prize fund. This means the EV per ticket is relatively stable across draws.
If you play as a syndicate, the mathematics remain the same, but your collective ticket count increases. Syndicates divide prize money by shares. Playing 10 tickets as a group does not change the odds per ticket, only your total coverage.
The house margin in the National Lottery is around 50 percent. This means half of ticket sales fund prizes, with the remainder distributed to retailers, operator costs, and the Good Causes fund. On a per-draw basis, you should expect to lose money as a long-term player.
UK Tax Treatment
Lottery winnings in the United Kingdom are not subject to income tax or capital gains tax. All prizes are paid in full.
This applies regardless of prize size. A jackpot win and a five-pound win both arrive tax-free. This is one of the few advantages UK lotteries hold over some European competitors.
The exemption applies to UK residents and non-residents claiming prizes from a UK-based lottery. Foreign nationals who win must still claim in the jurisdiction where they purchased the ticket, which is the UK.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between matching the main numbers and the Thunderball?
Your main numbers are five picks from 1 to 39. The Thunderball is one pick from 1 to 14. Prizes exist for matching the main numbers alone, but if your Thunderball also matches, your prize increases. This two-tier structure creates more prize divisions than a simple five-number draw would.
How often do Thunderball draws happen?
Draws occur twice per day, every day: 10:00 GMT and 19:30 GMT. This includes weekends and public holidays. No draws are cancelled or postponed.
What are my overall odds of winning any prize?
The odds of winning at least one prize division in any Thunderball draw are 1 in 34. This is significantly better than large jackpot lotteries but reflects the smaller typical prize sizes.
Can I use syndicate play with UK Thunderball?
Yes. Syndicates divide ticket costs and prize money among members. The odds per ticket do not change, but purchasing more tickets collectively increases your coverage of possible combinations. Prize division is based on your agreed shareholding.
Do I pay tax on UK Thunderball winnings?
No. UK lottery winnings, including Thunderball prizes of any size, are not subject to income tax or capital gains tax. You receive the full prize amount.
What happens if multiple players match the same prize division?
Prize money in each division is shared equally among all players who match that division in that draw. If the jackpot is shared, each winner receives an equal split of the total jackpot fund.
